The winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, told by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater through what Entertainment Weekly called, "the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade," Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. The landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock and roll.
Based on Frank Wedekind’s groundbreaking and controversial play (once banned in Germany), the rock score and searingly emotional book take the story of sexual awakening, youth revolt, and self-discovery into a new century. It’s 1891, and grown-ups hold all the cards. Headstrong Melchior and naive Wendla stumble into each others’ arms, passionate and curious, while anxious Moritz struggles to live up to the stringent expectations of society. With only each other for guidance, this group of young men and women travel the fraught and rocky path of adolescence, discovering their bodies, their minds, and themselves along the way. An electric, vibrant celebration of youth and rebellion.

Character List
Wendla Bergman (Lead, Mezzo-Soprano E3-E5, belter, appears under 20, actor must be 18+, mover)
- A naive young girl who has limited knowledge about adult issues, causing her to have trouble understanding things such as sexual attraction, her friend Martha's abuse, and pregnancy. She tends to learn these things by experiencing them. She is a childhood friend of the boys, and is the best friend of Thea. She has a sexual relationship with Melchior.
- Partial nudity (breast). Role includes an on-stage sex scene.
- Headstrong, handsome, and charismatic. He knows much more than the others because of what he reads in books and is able to see the corruption in society. He very well could have risen to the top of his class, but instead rejects his school's hard regime and rebels against it.
- Partial nudity (buttocks). Role includes an on-stage sex scene.
- Intense and nervous. Melchior's best friend. He feels intense pressure from his parents and his peers to succeed, and he frequently struggles in school.
- Role includes an implied suicide by gunshot to the head.
- A humorous, intelligent and narcissistic classmate of Melchior. Comfortable with his sexuality, he is Ernst's love interest.
- Role includes same-sex kissing and on-stage masturbation (no nudity).
- A sweet classmate. He is Hänschen's love interest.
- Role includes same-sex kissing.
- A friend of Wendla's who is abused by her father, the worst evidence of which she hides from others. She has a crush on Moritz, and is chastised by the other girls for it.
- Another classmate who lusts after his older, busty piano teacher.
- Another childhood friend who runs away from an abusive home to live in an artists' colony. She is somewhat less connected to the main story than the other children, as she doesn't appear in multiple group numbers. Ilse is used almost symbolically in many scenes. To Martha, she is a warning of what may happen if she speaks out. To Moritz, she is hope, and a last chance for him.
- Another classmate who has a dream about his mother.
- A confrontational school girl and Wendla's best friend. She has a crush on Melchior.
