About A Broadway Cabaret

MMTC's 4th Annual A Broadway Cabaret will be held October 5th and 6th, 2018 at The Playhouse in San Anselmo. Rehearsal Schedule and Conflict Calendar coming soon.

Come join the Marin Musical Theatre Company for an evening of music, song, and dance as we celebrate our 4th annual fundraising event!  Like last year, MMTC will again share proceeds from A Broadway Cabaret with The Playhouse in San Anselmo, the iconic theater where we perform our summer musical theatre productions. The mission of The Playhouse is to provide a low cost, state of the art, performance venue for the community. MMTC is proud and honored to partner with such a gem in Marin County.

Time Commitment
There is very little time commitment - Sunday afternoon/evenings from August 26th-September 23rd, a couple days of Tech Week, and the performances. That's it! See the conflict calendar for dates/times.

About Song Selection
Gather your friends and have some fun!  This year's A Broadway Cabaret's theme is MISMATCHED!  What does mismatched mean?  It can be any number of things that would make your casting in the role of the character who sings the song inappropriate or impossible. For example, wrong gender, wrong age, wrong ethnicity, a gay/lesbian duo singing a duet written for straight characters, wrong body type (swrawny singing a song written for a body-builder)...See below for some ideas!
Consider choosing an up-beat, joyful, or funny song over a slow or sad ballad. Group songs (duets, trios, quartets, and small groups) will be given strong priority over solos. Please come to the audition off-book and with basic blocking or choreography.

Examples of Mismatched Songs
Tomorrow from Annie by grandmas
Popular from Wicked by 2 men
Drive a Person Crazy from Company by 3 men
All I Care About is Love from Chicago by a woman with male backup singers
Chip's Lament from Spelling Bee by a woman
At the Ballet from A Chorus Line by 3 men or women clearly not ballerinas
Take Me or Leave Me from Rent by 2 men or a man and a woman
I'll Make a Man Out of You from Mulan by women singing to a man
Schuyler Sisters from Hamilton by 3 men
Kid's songs from Matilda, Annie, Sound of Music sung by adults

This year, we are looking to create vignettes of 1 to 2-minute cuts of MISMATCHED songs in the following categories:
  • Songs that Celebrate Autumn
  • "I WANT" songs
    • Examples include "Something's Coming" from West Side Story,"Some People," from Gypsy, "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," from My Fair Lady,  "Corner of the Sky" from Pippin, and "The Wizard and I," from Wicked.
  • Great Songs from Classic Musicals (pre-1960)
  • Disney Favorites from Broadway Shows
  • Songs about Broadway
  • Songs about specific locations - cities, places
  • Songs from Current Musicals (2000-Present)

What if there is a song I really, really want to sing?
That's wonderful - we're looking forward to hearing it!  If it's a solo, is there a way to bring in more people? Do you have any friends who may want to sing a verse, or add some harmonies? Our audiences have spoken - they love songs with multiple people!

Please prepare/bring:
  • Ensure you have filled out the audition form (CLICK HERE to sign up)
  • Participation agreement
  • Conflict calendar
  • 32 bars (approximately 1 minute) of the song(s) you want to perform at A Broadway Cabaret. Please have your song memorized.
  • Sheet music in your key
    • Accompanist will not transpose
  • Optional: Theatre resume

Note: No karaoke, CD backing tracks, YouTube links, or a cappella accepted.

Audition Tips

We know that auditioning can be scary - we've been there! MMTC's artistic director, musical directors, and  choreographer will go out of their way to make this process as painless as possible for everybody.  We know you will have a blast if you join the cast of one of our shows!   Don't let stage fright stop you from attending the audition!

Encouraging participation by people of all ages and levels of experience is a crucial part of our mission. Below, find some information to help you understand how to prepare in advance, and some tips to help you be as successful as possible.

Singing Audition Tips

If you are auditioning for our annual fundraiser, A Broadway Cabaret, please sing the song(s) you want considered for the event.  If you are auditioning for one of our full-scale musical theater productions, please sing any song from a musical that you love, preferably in the style of the show you are auditioning for. It should be a song that you are comfortable singing and enjoy.  If you don't sing much, are auditioning for the first time, or are unsure of what to sing, pick something you know well.  We are looking for two things -  people with amazing voices who could be considered for leads, and enthusiastic, friendly, team-oriented people of all ages who can sing on key and be in the ensemble.  Please project as much as comfortable - try to sing loud enough that people halfway back in the theatre can hear you.  Smile.  Tell us your name before you start.  And when you are done, smile again!...and don't forget to breathe.  That's important!  :)

Dancing Audition Tips

For our full-scale musical auditions, you will be taught a movement combination to see if you can stay with the counts, and what sort of energy you bring to the dance.  There are numerous dance-heavy ensemble songs in our productions, so all actors will also be taught a more advanced combination to better assist with casting. Wear clothes you can move in, and - if you own them already - bring character shoes or other dance shoes (ballet flats, jazz shoes, etc).

Call Backs

If you are being considered for a bigger role in our full-scale musical productions, you will be called back for a second different night of auditions.  This is the point at which you will read with other actors considered for lead and supporting parts and sing the actual songs from the show.  You do not
need to memorize these song, but you will want to know the tune well enough to sing confidently at the callbacks with the words in front of you.  We will also post the sides that will be performed at callbacks on the website so you can practice at home.  NOT ALL PARTS WILL BE CALLED BACK. If we can cast a role from the initial audition, there will not be a callback, so do not assume that you were not cast in the show simply because you did not get called back. The cast list will be posted on the website within 72 hours of callbacks.
